Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced plans to build a high school in Puerto Aventuras, push for round-the-clock health services and regularize existing settlements in the community during a visit on Thursday.

Accompanied by Puerto Aventuras mayor Juan José Arenas Carvajal and members of her cabinet, Mercado met with residents and street vendors to hear their concerns, saying the community’s growth — its population now exceeds 45,000 — requires stronger infrastructure and wider public services. She said crews will be reinforced for pothole repair and street lighting.

Mercado also led a crime-prevention and community-outreach operation and inspected a large-scale urban improvement drive covering trash collection, removal of bulky waste, streetlight repairs, pothole patching and the cleaning of drainage wells.

Economic office to reopen

The mayor announced the reopening of a liaison office for the Secretariat of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, which will serve merchants, entrepreneurs and market vendors and accept complaints about improper charges and extortion.

She also previewed mobility projects, improvements to bus stops and the arrival of more than 14,000 federal Viviendas del Bienestar housing units, aimed at working-class families.

Her agenda included a stop at the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) module at the Citizen Security Department headquarters, where residents can now apply for driving permits and licenses.

More than 100 officers from the Municipal Citizen Security Department (SSCM) took part in the security operation, deployed in 25 patrol vehicles under the command of Carlos Montesinos.

Arenas Carvajal said he will personally follow up on residents’ requests. “We will be close to all of you. We will have a government like our president’s, with open doors, and we will be working around the clock,” he said.

Eyder Peraza Sabido, the city’s secretary of municipal public services, said the improvement drive has collected just over 28 tonnes of garbage and bulky waste, rehabilitated 14 drainage wells and cleaned and pruned about 2.5 kilometers along the federal highway.
