Endangered Hocofaisan Chick Hatches at La Reina Zoo in Tizimin

A newly hatched hocofaisan chick at La Reina Zoo in Tizimin, Yucatan

Tizimin, Yucatan — La Reina Zoo in the municipality of Tizimin has announced the hatching of a hocofaisan chick, a bird endemic to Yucatan that is at risk of extinction.

José Manuel Alcocer Perera, the zoo’s manager, said the birth is part of a conservation project aimed at breeding native species that had not previously reproduced in the facility. He highlighted the coordinated work of veterinarians, biologists, and nutritionists as key to the success.

The chick hatched recently, and two more eggs remain in incubation, expected to take about a month. The zoo acquired a specialized incubator as part of efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and animal management.

In addition to the hocofaisan, the zoo has successfully bred 18 white-tailed deer, three peacocks, two chachalacas, five wild boar, four raccoons, and six quail in recent times — all native to the region.

Alcocer Perera noted that these results are unprecedented for the zoo and form part of a long-term project that will continue with species such as the badger, ocelot, and wild turkey, with the goal of conserving endemic fauna and encouraging the public, especially children, to care for their environment.
