Elderly Woman Hit by Va y Ven Bus in Merida; Driver Detained

Merida, Yucatan — An elderly woman suffered severe leg injuries after being struck by a Va y Ven public transit bus in downtown Merida on Wednesday night. The driver attempted to flee but was apprehended near San Cristobal Park.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 54th Street with 65th and 67th Streets. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before rushing her to a hospital, where her condition remains under observation.

Officers from the Public Security Department (SSP) cordoned off the area and conducted an investigation to determine responsibility.

The Yucatan Transport Agency (ATY) confirmed it has activated institutional protocols to follow up on the case and is coordinating with authorities to build the investigation file. The agency pledged to ensure the victim receives compensation and damages, pending the determination of liability. ATY also announced the creation of a new protocol to support people affected in incidents involving public transport, aiming to improve response and institutional care.
