Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — On Earth Day, the nonprofit Ecoliiks announced results from a partnership that has turned more than 300 kilograms of waste into functional infrastructure for public schools in this coastal community.
Since 2023, Ecoliiks, together with Fundación RCD and Positive Legacy, has built three ECObancas (eco-benches) and two ECOcomedores (eco-dining halls) using ecoladrillos — plastic bottles stuffed with non-recyclable waste. The projects benefit more than 4,000 students.
At Secundaria General ‘José Antonio Tzuc Esparza,’ workers constructed an ECOcomedor using 220 ecoladrillos, equivalent to 110 kg of waste. Telesecundaria ‘Luis Manuel Aguilar Cruz’ received a similar space made from 172 ecoladrillos, or 86 kg of reused trash.
The initiative also installed three ECObancas:
- Primaria ‘Miguel Ortega Navarrete’: two benches at multipurpose courts (81 kg of waste total).
- Primaria ‘Luis Donaldo Colosio’: one bench made from 88 ecoladrillos.
In total, the project has diverted 321 kg of waste from landfills, turning it into 642 ecoladrillos that now serve as school furniture. Ecoliiks said the goal extends beyond physical construction to fostering environmental awareness among young people in Quintana Roo.
