Cozumel to Welcome More Than 2,500 Triathletes for Ironman 70.3

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — More than 2,500 triathletes from 50 countries will compete Sunday in the 15th edition of Ironman 70.3 Cozumel, an event that will also feature 40 athletes from the island itself.

The race will be hosted at Chankanaab Natural Park, which is managed by the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC). Organizers presented the details of the competition at a press conference.

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the FPMC’s general director, welcomed the triathletes and said the foundation will provide all necessary support at the Chankanaab facilities. She added that visitors will also be able to explore Cozumel’s natural attractions and spend time with their families during their stay.

Mauricio Savala Alonso, director of Ironman Mexico, highlighted the coordination among the institutions and organizations involved, which he credited with keeping the competition on the island for 15 consecutive years.

Local Athletes and a Boost for Business

Forty Cozumel triathletes will take part alongside competitors traveling from abroad. Organizers said the island has become a recurring destination for athletes who return year after year and take advantage of their visit to explore local tourist attractions.

The event is also expected to bring business to hotels, restaurants, tour operators and other companies tied to the arrival of visitors.

Sports Tourism and Environmental Responsibility

The FPMC said hosting international sporting events helps position Cozumel as a sports tourism destination and generates economic activity for the community. At the same time, it stressed the importance of visitors and competitors making responsible use of the natural areas that form part of the island’s heritage.

Also taking part in the presentation were elite triathletes Cecilia Pérez and Rodrigo González; Keats MacGonigal of Ironman USA; Isela Valenzuela, general manager of the Cozumel Hotel Association; Elías Farah Ceh, the municipal tourism director; and Pablo Aguilar Torres, a representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ).
