Bus Crash Traps Driver in Wrecked Car on Playa del Carmen Boulevard

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A red Renault Kwid compact car collided with a Volvo passenger bus shortly after noon on Boulevard Playa del Carmen in the municipality of Solidaridad, leaving the car’s driver seriously injured and pinned inside the wreckage.

The crash occurred at the intersection with Avenida Universidades, near the Galerías El Triunfo shopping area, and halted traffic for several minutes on one of the busiest corridors in the municipality.

Driver Freed With Hydraulic Tools

Preliminary assessments at the scene indicated that the bus driver pulled onto the main road abruptly without noticing the car, which was traveling in the left lane at excessive speed. The Kwid struck the front left side of the bus head-on, destroying the car’s engine compartment and windshield.

Witnesses called the 911 emergency line, and firefighters, civil protection personnel and paramedics arrived at the site. Using hydraulic rescue tools known as the jaws of life, crews worked for several minutes to cut through the car’s frame and free the man, whose lower legs were trapped between the dashboard and the crushed bodywork.

Rescuers stabilized him at the scene before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition was described as delicate with a guarded prognosis.

Firefighters spread dirt and cleaned the asphalt to control spilled oil and fuel, while municipal traffic officers diverted vehicles around the closure and tow trucks removed both vehicles to an impound lot.

Traffic officers detained the bus driver and handed him over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine responsibility for the collision.
