Cancún to Open Art Sales Gallery With Works by 200 Local Creators in 2027

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún will take its first step toward becoming an art-sales destination in 2027, when a new art store built alongside the City Theater’s galleries opens with works by more than 200 local creators.

The store is under construction next to the galleries of the Núcleo Yaxil cultural complex and will be run by a private operator, because the institution itself cannot carry out commercial transactions, officials said.

Pablo García Robles, curator and head of galleries at Núcleo Yaxil, said the facilities will close out 2026 with roughly 15 exhibitions covering various branches of the visual arts over a six-month period — an achievement, he said, given that the sector was neglected in Cancún for many years.

He acknowledged that attendance at the exhibitions held so far has been moderate but is growing, as residents adapt to a type of event that had not been staged in the city for a long time.

A Long-Awaited Outlet for Local Artists

García Robles said one of Cancún’s longest-standing gaps has been the lack of a venue where artists can sell their work, both to residents and to tourists looking for local art. The new store, he said, will bring together pieces in a range of styles by artists living in Cancún and give them a chance to make their work known.

The space will show plastic and visual artworks by at least 200 creators from the resort city.

“With that, Cancún puts itself at the forefront of art sales galleries like New York, or those of other European countries,” he said.

He added that the store will also give visitors who want to buy art a way to learn about the work of Cancún’s artists.
