Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Authorities shut down a restaurant in downtown Cozumel late Monday night after a violent brawl broke out earlier in the evening, leaving two people hospitalized.
Officials from the city’s Fiscalization Directorate sealed the establishment just before midnight, hours after a video of the fight went viral on social media. The brawl, which occurred around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Rafael E. Melgar Avenue and 5th Street, involved a group of domestic tourists, taxi drivers, and restaurant employees, according to witnesses.
The municipal government said the Public Security Department responded immediately to the report of the fight, which took place just steps from the waterfront boardwalk.
In addition to the closure, authorities confirmed that two people are under medical observation. The city said it is pursuing the corresponding processes in a civic court, and those involved will need to initiate legal proceedings with the State Prosecutor’s Office.
Witnesses said the tourists appeared to act aggressively toward a waitress, which escalated into a confrontation with restaurant staff, then taxi drivers and passersby. One video shows an unconscious person being taken to a hospital after being hit in the head.
As of Tuesday morning, no arrests had been reported.
