Cozumel Reinforces Dengue Surveillance at Cruise Terminal

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Vector control teams have intensified mosquito surveillance at Punta Langosta cruise terminal as the island prepares for an influx of visitors, with officials working to keep the Aedes aegypti mosquito — a carrier of dengue, Zika and chikungunya — from gaining a foothold.

Hugo Pérez, the sector coordinator, said the effort is part of the municipality’s Vector Control Program and includes continuous monitoring of ovitraps placed at strategic points across Cozumel. The traps let officials gauge the presence and density of the mosquito and respond promptly with control actions in high-traffic areas, he said.

Pérez stressed that although authorities are maintaining checks at entry points like the docks, prevention also depends on residents eliminating potential breeding sites around their homes and in public spaces. He urged the public to follow the "wash, cover, flip and toss" method to avoid leaving standing water where mosquitoes can reproduce.
