Cozumel Lawmaker Hosts Free Pet Wellness Event With Vaccinations, Microchipping

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A local lawmaker hosted a free animal wellness event Saturday, providing rabies vaccinations, deworming, and identification microchips for dogs and cats at Parque Las Gradas in the San Miguel 1 neighborhood.

Deputy Renán Sánchez Tajonar, who leads the Congress of Quintana Roo’s Government and Political Coordination Board (JUCOPO), said the event responded to recurring requests from residents during neighborhood meetings. Pet care has become a frequent concern among families, he noted.

By bringing these services directly to the community, the initiative also addresses public health, as vaccination and veterinary care protect both animals and the families that live with them, Sánchez said. Microchipping helps reduce abandonment by allowing lost pets to be traced back to their owners, he added.

The legislator highlighted his chamber’s recent support for animal welfare measures, including stronger penalties for animal abuse, creation of a state registry of pet crematories, and promotion of municipal veterinary units.

Sánchez announced this was the first of several such events and that his office would collect further requests to replicate the program in other neighborhoods.

“For the families of Cozumel, a pet is another member of the household,” Sánchez said. “Caring for them is caring for the family and also caring for everyone’s health. This is the first event, not the last: as a Cozumeleño, I am here, present and working.”
