Armed Men Try to Abduct Woman on Cozumel; She Escapes on Her Motorcycle

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A woman riding her motorcycle to work was the target of an attempted abduction Sunday afternoon when two armed men intercepted her along Cozumel’s southern coastal strip, according to preliminary reports.

The incident took place on Avenida Claudio Canto, near Base 2 of the island’s fire station. The woman, wearing a white shirt and a beige skirt, was on her motorcycle when two men in an orange-and-red pickup truck cut her off.

The men got out of the vehicle and threatened her with firearms, reportedly trying to force her into the truck. She struggled with them and managed to keep them from pulling her inside.

According to the report, the attackers claimed to be investigative police officers, a claim that has not been confirmed by authorities.

After breaking free, the woman fled on her motorcycle and reached a Martí sporting goods store, where she asked employees for help.

State Preventive Police officers aboard unit 12305 and municipal patrols arrived at the scene, secured the area and took statements.

Authorities later took the woman to file a formal complaint with the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office.

Police agencies are maintaining a search operation to locate those responsible for the attempted abduction. Officials have not publicly announced any arrests or further details in the case.
