Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is planning a third temporary power generation project to reinforce electricity supply in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, one of Mexico’s fastest-growing energy consumption regions.
The initiative involves installing mobile generation units to reduce the risk of service interruptions during peak demand periods, especially during holidays and hot weather.
According to several projects presented by the state-owned utility, these temporary solutions will provide additional capacity while permanent power infrastructure works advance.
Cancun and the Riviera Maya have seen some of the highest increases in energy demand in the country, driven by rapid population growth and tourism in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel.
Other measures include strengthening electrical substations to ensure system reliability. Experts say these actions aim to prevent disruptions to the tourism sector and local residents while larger generation and transmission projects are developed to meet future energy needs in the Yucatan Peninsula.
