Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Cancún Taxi Union “Andrés Quintana Roo” is pushing to transform local transportation by adopting electric vehicles as it renews its aging fleet.
Approximately 25% of the more than 8,600 taxis operating in the city require replacement due to regulations that set a maximum age of 10 years for service vehicles.
Union Secretary General Rubén Antonio Carrillo Buenfil said the organization is negotiating to secure low-interest loans and attractive financing options for its members. The goal is to help drivers access clean technology that benefits the environment while improving service efficiency.
“The global trend is shifting from fossil fuels to electric power. As a country, we’re moving toward that transition with the planet’s care in mind,” Carrillo Buenfil stated.
He emphasized that Mexico should accelerate this change, following examples from Europe and the United States, to reduce environmental impact in key tourist destinations like Quintana Roo.
Benefits for Users and Drivers
Beyond environmental considerations, the union believes electric vehicles offer:
- Greater comfort: Quieter, more modern rides for passengers
- Economic viability: Lower maintenance costs and long-term fuel savings
- Sustainability: An alternative aligned with global environmental protection policies
Through meetings with specialized companies, the union aims not only to comply with mobility laws but also to position Cancún’s taxi drivers at the forefront of automotive technology, offering high-quality service that’s environmentally responsible.
