Two Arrested in Playa del Carmen in Vehicle Fraud Investigation

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — State authorities announced the arrest of two people in Playa del Carmen as part of an investigation into irregular vehicle sales schemes.

State Prosecutor Raciel López Salazar reported during a security briefing that police made the arrests in coordination with municipal officers. The suspects, identified as Manuel Jesús “N” and Mario Arturo “N,” were detained in the Misión de las Flores neighborhood.

During the operation, police seized dried plant material resembling marijuana, crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine, and a Nissan March vehicle with Yucatan license plates. The vehicle is linked to an investigation file opened in Benito Juárez.

Investigations indicate both suspects are connected to at least two fraud cases involving vehicle sales where cars were later reported stolen.

One case file shows that in September 2023, a person purchased a 2023 Nissan March for 192,000 pesos after seeing an offer on a digital platform. The transaction was completed at a commercial plaza on López Portillo Avenue in Benito Juárez, where the vehicle and documentation were delivered.

During follow-up on March 27, 2026, officers located a vehicle with matching characteristics and identification numbers but different license plates in Playa del Carmen. One of the suspects was driving the vehicle at the time of the arrest.

Another suspect was detained during the same operation and maintains a family relationship with the vehicle’s registered owner. Investigations indicate one of the suspects previously made a report to emergency services about supposedly finding the vehicle.

Authorities say the scheme involved offering vehicles with altered documentation and later reporting them as stolen. Both suspects have been handed over to judicial authorities, who will determine their legal status within established timeframes.
