Cancún, Quintana Roo — The project to replace lifeguard towers at all seven Blue Flag-certified beaches in Cancún is moving forward in the technical planning phase and could be completed this year, according to the director of Civil Protection for Benito Juárez, Antonio Riveroll Ribbon.
Riveroll said the project is currently under review by the Public Works Department, which is responsible for preparing estimates, calculations, and the necessary planning for execution.
“We are working on it. The matter is with Public Works, where all the planning, estimates, and calculations must be done before it goes to the Sanitation Department for approval to start work,” he said.
The proposal calls for replacing the towers at the seven beaches that hold the international Blue Flag designation, with a total of eight structures included. Riveroll explained that Playa Delfines has two towers, so the total exceeds the number of beaches.
He clarified that the project is not merely maintenance but a complete replacement of existing towers with new installations that offer better operating conditions and safety for lifeguards.
“It will be for the seven Blue Flag beaches. Towers that are in good condition will be repurposed for other uses, but those included in the project will be renovated; the current ones will be removed and new towers installed,” he said.
Riveroll emphasized the commitment to complete the work in 2026, following instructions from Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, who has been closely monitoring the project.
“It has to be done this year because that is the mayor’s instruction. She is very attentive to this issue, and we are pushing it forward, although we also understand that all technical and administrative processes must be completed before starting,” he said.
The tower replacement is part of broader efforts to strengthen beach safety in Cancún, particularly at beaches with international certifications that require high standards of quality, services, and visitor protection.
