Three Arrested in Tulum After Taxi Driver Beaten and Robbed for Refusing Extra Passengers

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Three men were arrested in this Caribbean coastal town after a taxi driver was beaten and robbed for refusing to take on more passengers than had been booked, officials said.

The driver told police the attack happened Saturday night at a business on Avenida Kukulkán, where the three suspects turned violent after he told them he could not make the trip under those conditions. He said the fare had originally been requested for a single passenger.

According to his account, all three men took part in the assault, leaving him with injuries to his face, neck and chest and a possible fractured jaw. He also reported that the attackers took cash and his cellphone.

Employees at the establishment stepped in when they saw the beating and managed to stop it while emergency services were called. Red Cross paramedics arrived to assess and treat the driver, who required medical attention for his injuries.

After the incident was reported to the 911 emergency line, police officers reached the scene and arrested the three men the driver identified as the alleged attackers.

The detainees were handed over to the relevant authorities, who will determine their legal status and assign responsibility for the assault and the reported theft.
