Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Around 115 boats carried island families across the water to Isla Contoy on Saturday for the 27th annual maritime procession honoring the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, the patron saint of fishermen.
Families began gathering at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception early in the morning before walking to the town’s wooden fiscal pier, where the fleet set out on the traditional crossing.
Eyder Jahil Hoth Pérez, director general of economic development and tourism, attended on behalf of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde and joined island families, fishermen and tourism workers for the celebration.
During the voyage, participants prayed the rosary and sang religious hymns led by the parish choir. On arrival at Isla Contoy, Father Rafael González Guzmán celebrated Mass in the island’s chapel in honor of the Virgin.
The municipality said the procession is one of the traditions that sustain the identity of Isla Mujeres, bringing generations of families together around their faith, their roots and the community’s close ties to the sea and its fishing industry.
