Cancún, Quintana Roo — Federal environmental officials and Cancún municipal ecologists have rescued a white sea turtle from the city’s hotel zone and moved it to a wildlife management unit, where it is receiving treatment for a shell injury.
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), working with the General Directorate of Ecology in Benito Juárez — the municipality that includes Cancún — responded to the rescued turtle, a specimen of Chelonia mydas, the species commonly known as the green sea turtle.
Specialists cleaned and treated a wound on the animal’s shell and fed it as part of its initial care. Over the coming week, veterinarians will carry out a full medical examination and collect samples to assess the turtle’s metabolic condition.
Those test results will give officials a clearer picture of the animal’s health and help determine what further treatment it needs to recover.
Profepa said it will keep tracking the case alongside the other authorities and specialists involved to ensure the turtle receives proper care throughout its recovery.
