Cancún, Quintana Roo — The first phase of Cancún’s new Animal Welfare Hospital is 85 percent complete, Yuli Lázaro Huérfano, director of the Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare, announced during an inspection of the construction site.
The project is rising in Supermanzana 99 and is designed to expand the care, protection and treatment of domestic and wild animals in at-risk situations. The first phase represents an investment of more than 30 million pesos.
The facility will include the following areas:
- Veterinary consultation rooms
- An emergency room
- Operating rooms
- Hospitalization and maternity wards
- A laboratory
- Imaging and X-ray services
- Sterilization and animal holding spaces
The hospital will also handle cases of animal abuse and abandonment and will promote responsible adoption, sterilization and public awareness about animal care.
According to municipal officials, the new facility will sharply expand the city’s capacity to treat animals. The current Animal Welfare Center handles between 35 and 40 consultations a day, while the new hospital could serve as many as 160 daily.
