Efforts to Protect Tulum’s Turtle Nests Win Praise

Sea turtle experts have noted a significant improvement in the behavior of tourists and hotels in Tulum, which has aided in the conservation of turtle nests and eggs. Biologist Alberto Villegas, who has experience working in turtle camps from the Sian Ka’an reserve to Akumal, has noted that the beaches now have numerous signs in both Spanish and English that provide comprehensive information on how to respect the presence of turtles.

Local beachgoers and visitors, both Mexican and foreign, have been observed to respect these guidelines. Various organizations dedicated to the protection and preservation of the species also play a role in identifying and safeguarding turtle nests.

The business sector, particularly hotels and restaurants, have trained their staff on the appropriate actions to take during the nesting season, which runs from April to November. Villegas, a marine life specialist, has observed that beach beds maintain an optimal distance and adhere to music volume and lighting guidelines at night to avoid disorienting the nesting turtles.

Coastal homeowners in Tulum have also made significant contributions to turtle preservation efforts. However, Villegas warns that vigilance must be maintained as natural and human predators, as well as the impact of climate change, continue to pose threats to the survival of the species. He emphasized the increasing importance of sea turtle preservation in recent years, noting that while the beaches attract thousands of tourists annually, they also serve as a natural sanctuary for various turtle species.
