Cancún Residents Fear Rising Crime Tide

In recent days, Cancún has seen a significant increase in violent robberies, leading to a heightened sense of insecurity among its residents. Many people are choosing to stay at home unless absolutely necessary due to the escalating crime rates.

More and more residents are turning to social media to stay informed about local crime incidents. Incidents that once seemed distant are now becoming commonplace and deeply concerning. One resident, Raúl, a local hardware store manager, shared a video he received showing thieves breaking into moving cars on main avenues, not just in areas with scarce police presence. He expressed his concern about the increasing violence and the lack of effective surveillance in the city.

Residents are becoming increasingly alarmed by the frequency and proximity of these criminal acts. However, they report hearing little from authorities regarding strategies to combat crime or potential solutions. The local police are still investigating a series of armed attacks that occurred last Sunday in the Paseos del Mar subdivision and at a BBVA bank branch in Mercado 28. These attacks resulted in three fatalities and one injury, with drug dealing and attempted robbery being considered as possible motives.
