Brother of Ines Gomez Mont’s Husband Arrested in Cancun

Alejandro Mario Alvarez Puga, brother of Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga, arrested in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mexican authorities arrested Alejandro Mario Alvarez Puga, brother of Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga — the husband of former television host Ines Gomez Mont — on Thursday night in Cancun, according to the National Detention Registry.

Alejandro Mario Alvarez Puga was taken into custody at 9:26 p.m. on Boulevard Kukulcan in the Puerto Cancun area. He was described as light-skinned, 1.80 meters tall, with a beard, curly graying hair, and no visible tattoos. He was wearing light blue jeans, a short-sleeved blue shirt, and green loafers.

Officials transferred him to the Criminal Justice Center at the South Prison in Mexico City. While authorities did not specify the reason for his arrest, it is believed to be linked to money laundering accusations against his brother, as both were partners in the same law firm.

Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga and Ines Gomez Mont have been under scrutiny since 2021 for alleged corruption and financial crimes tied to the previous federal administration. They face charges of organized crime, money laundering, embezzlement of public funds, and tax fraud.

Prosecutors accuse the couple of leading a network that used shell companies to divert approximately 3 billion pesos (about $150 million) from the budget of the Administrative Office for Prevention and Social Readaptation, intended for federal prison contracts during the administration of former President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga was arrested on September 24, 2025, in Florida, United States, on immigration violations. Mexico has requested his extradition, but U.S. authorities reportedly denied it on grounds that the charges are not violent. His lawyer has reportedly applied for political asylum.

Ines Gomez Mont remains a fugitive. Interpol has issued a Red Notice for her arrest since 2021, but her whereabouts are unknown.
