Tulum, Quintana Roo — Residents and motorists have reported a rise in attempted robberies along the Tulum–Cobá state highway, particularly on the stretch leading to the community of Macario Gómez, sparking alarm among those who use the route.
According to driver and resident accounts, unknown individuals have tried to intercept vehicles at various points along the highway, taking advantage of poor lighting and limited police patrols. This has generated fear among those traveling the road at night and in the early morning hours.
The Tulum–Cobá highway is a daily route for workers, transport operators, tourism service providers, and residents of nearby communities like Macario Gómez and Francisco Uh May. Any security risk directly impacts the mobility and safety of hundreds who depend on this corridor.
Neighbors in the transitional zone noted the problem affects not only drivers on the highway but also those who live or work nearby, as they fear incidents could escalate without preventive action from authorities.
Some residents indicated that a lack of lighting on certain segments and scarce nighttime surveillance have contributed to this stretch being perceived as vulnerable, especially for people returning to their communities after work.
In response, citizens have called on security officials to increase patrols, implement surveillance operations, and improve lighting in high-risk areas to prevent crime and ensure the safety of daily travelers on the state highway connecting Tulum with inland communities.
