Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Five people have been sentenced to three years and two months in prison after the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) proved their involvement in simple possession of cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana, following an operation in this coastal city.
The sentence was handed down through an abbreviated procedure against Andrés “N,” Bryan “N,” Piedad “N,” Joel “N,” and Roxana “N,” who were also ordered to pay a fine equivalent to 40 UMAS (a Mexican inflation-adjusted unit) each, as requested by the federal public prosecutor.
The case began with a complaint about suspected drug sales at a home near the Colonia Colosio neighborhood in Playa del Carmen. The FGR’s Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR) in Quintana Roo opened an investigation.
Search Warrant Leads to Drug Seizure
As part of the inquiry, agents from the Federal Ministerial Police (PFM) obtained and executed a search warrant at the property, where they arrested the five suspects.
During the raid, authorities seized 1 kilogram 575 grams of cocaine, 97 grams of methamphetamine, and 25 grams of marijuana. The drugs were turned over to the judicial authorities along with the detainees.
In an initial ruling, a judge declined to formally charge the suspects. However, FECOR requested a review of that decision, which was later overturned and replaced with an order binding all five suspects to stand trial.
Conviction Secured
After further proceedings, the federal public prosecutor presented evidence supporting the charges, leading to the conviction of all five individuals. Each received a sentence of three years and two months in prison and was ordered to pay the 40-UMA fine.
