Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The technical council of the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) approved accepting a 40,000-square-meter land donation from the Cozumel municipal government to build a new 90-bed General Zone Hospital on the island, with an estimated investment of more than 2,784 million pesos.
The authorization came during a regular session of the institute’s governing body, chaired by IMSS director general Zoé Robledo. It allows the institute to formalize the donation contract and move forward with the process of developing the medical facility, which officials say will strengthen care for more than 52,000 beneficiaries.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa welcomed the decision.
The money will cover construction, services and medical equipment. With the new hospital, the IMSS’s installed capacity in Cozumel will rise from 25 to 90 inpatient beds — 65 more than are currently available.
Lezama said Borsalino González Andrade, the IMSS’s director of administration, reported that based on the population projected for 2026, availability will climb from 0.47 to 1.71 beds per 1,000 beneficiaries.
Services Planned at the New Facility
The hospital will provide emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, outpatient specialty consultations, gynecological, obstetric and neonatal care, along with diagnostic support and clinical assistance services.
Officials also expect the facility to reduce the number of patients referred or transferred off the island for treatment and to improve continuity between primary and secondary levels of care.
Family medicine will continue to be offered at the IMSS’s current Cozumel facilities, which have eight consulting rooms operating on morning and afternoon shifts.
