Tulum, Quintana Roo – In various tourist destinations across Mexico, free access to beaches, which by law are national public-use assets, has become increasingly limited. In some regions of the country, there is barely one public access point for every 100 kilometers of coastline, making it difficult for local communities and visitors to enjoy these spaces without restrictions.
In response to this reality, Acceso Playa Tecate has emerged as an initiative that seeks to open and enable free, dignified, and accessible spaces for everyone who wishes to access the beach, while also promoting a culture of responsible coexistence and environmental care.
The proposal, in collaboration with consumption centers and government authorities, aims to enable free public access points to Mexican beaches. Currently, two access points are already open to the public at Coco Unlimited and Villa Las Estrellas in Tulum.
Through this initiative, the goal is to reconnect communities and visitors with beaches as common-use spaces, promoting responsible enjoyment and reaffirming that these are national assets of a public nature: accessible and available regardless of nationality or economic status.
With Acceso Playa Tecate, the brand contributes to raising awareness about the importance of keeping these spaces as meeting points for coexistence and enjoyment for everyone. The initiative also joins existing conversations in various tourist destinations across the country, offering a proactive, accessible, community-centered approach to moving toward more open, diverse, and inclusive environments.
“Acceso Playa Tecate reflects our ongoing commitment to always stand on the side of Mexicans and to promote bold actions that generate real impact. This initiative stems from the belief that free access to beaches can coexist with a culture of responsibility and respect. We believe in a long-term vision that promotes environmental care and the value of public spaces, so they can continue to serve as gathering places and spaces of enjoyment for people and communities, now and in the future,” said Esteban Velasco, Director of Tecate.
As part of the initiative, the free access points enabled by the brand will operate without any consumption requirement, ensuring that people may enter with their own food, drinks, and recreational items, thereby promoting truly free and unrestricted access.
Additionally, as part of HEINEKEN México’s environmental responsibility actions, containers will be installed for waste separation and recycling, integrated into an organized system for responsible waste collection and management.
“Starting with the push for free beach access in Tulum, the Acceso Playa Tecate initiative begins in the southeast of the country and brings to the table a necessary conversation about access, coexistence, and the responsible use of public spaces in one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations. Through this initiative, and thanks to partnerships with consumption centers and local actors in the region, we seek to join efforts to facilitate open access and promote respectful coexistence with the environment. We believe that when the private sector listens and works hand in hand with communities, it is possible to generate actions that strengthen the public use of spaces and contribute to more accessible and sustainable environments for everyone,” said Fabián Ruiz, Southeast Commercial Director at HEINEKEN México.
The Acceso Playa Tecate initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting open access and responsible coexistence in public spaces. This year, three free access spaces will be enabled in Quintana Roo, beginning in Tulum, with future implementation planned in other coastal states across the country.
