Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A 12-year-old girl died by suicide in her family home in Playa del Carmen, authorities reported Thursday.

The incident occurred on Lilis Avenue in the Privada Manzanilla section of the Misión de las Flores neighborhood. Emergency services responded to a 911 call and found the girl hanging by a cable in the bathroom.

Paramedics from civil protection services and officers from the Quintana Roo Public Security Department arrived at the scene but were unable to revive the child, who showed no vital signs.

Authorities interviewed the girl’s mother, 35-year-old Doriselia Tiul Ledesma, originally from Tabasco, who said her daughter had hanged herself with a cable.

Police officers from unit 82177, led by officer José Miguel Bernal del Valle, secured the scene and notified the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office to begin an investigation.

Forensic specialists from the prosecutor’s office collected evidence and opened an investigation file. The body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service for an autopsy.

Officers from the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence provided support to the mother at the scene.

The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the death, including the girl’s quality of life and family relationships. Authorities have not yet determined what led to the suicide.
