Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Heavily armed, masked men abducted the driver of a white Chevrolet at a busy Chetumal intersection on Tuesday, prompting authorities to activate the state’s Red Code emergency protocol and deploy security forces across the capital.

The incident occurred at the corner of Avenida Belice and Anastacio Guzmán street, near the Ley Federal de Aguas neighborhood, according to preliminary information gathered at the scene.

Witnesses and initial reports indicated that the gunmen cut off the Chevrolet without warning, pointed weapons at the driver and forced him out of the vehicle. They then pulled him into a second vehicle and sped away in an unknown direction, leaving the victim’s vehicle abandoned in the middle of the roadway.

The attack reportedly targeted a man who is, or until recently was, an active member of the National Guard, a detail that has not been officially confirmed but immediately raised alarm among military commanders in the region.

Large-Scale Response

After the alert was raised through the 911 emergency line, officers from the Public Security Department (SSC), municipal police and federal forces arrived to secure the scene and cordon off the area to preserve evidence.

With the Red Code activated, authorities launched high-intensity patrols and random checkpoints at the main entrances, exits and secondary roads of Chetumal in an effort to locate the attackers.

Specialists from the State Prosecutor’s Office and forensic investigators also arrived to process the abandoned Chevrolet and gather testimony for the investigation file.

Security agencies have released no further details and have not announced any arrests or disclosed the whereabouts of the victim. Search operations continued Tuesday at strategic points across the municipality.
