Cancún, Quintana Roo — Emergency services and police responded to a tense standoff Friday afternoon after a young woman experiencing a schizophrenia crisis attacked her mother and another relative before barricading herself inside her home with a sharp object.

The incident occurred in the Villas Otoch Paraíso neighborhood’s Supermanzana 259, block 106, on Margaritas Avenue. Authorities received an emergency call at 5:45 p.m. reporting that a 22-year-old woman had assaulted her mother and another family member.

Municipal police from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) arrived to find the mother outside the home. She told officers her daughter had experienced what appeared to be a schizophrenia episode, attacked her, and then forced her out of the house.

Another relative also suffered minor injuries during the incident. The young woman then locked herself inside the residence, shouting that she would harm herself if authorities didn’t leave the area.

Police requested backup from civil protection paramedics and firefighters, who attempted to establish communication with the woman. After several tense minutes, negotiators convinced her to throw out the sharp object and open the door.

Emergency personnel then helped her down from the second floor and provided first aid. Paramedics transported the woman to Cancún General Hospital for evaluation, accompanied by her mother.

Security sources said the woman entered a crisis that led to the attacks on her family members before forcing them from the home.
