Cancún Tourism Sector Urges Dialogue After Transporter Protests Snarl Airport Access

A long line of cars trucks and buses is stopped in heavy traffic on a multi lane highway beside a green overhead road sign reading Chetumal.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Tourism leaders in Cancún are calling on government officials and the private sector to prioritize dialogue and negotiated agreements to prevent the kind of disruption caused by a transport workers’ protest that snarled traffic and delayed travelers heading to the airport a day earlier.

The sector said it fully respects citizens’ right to demonstrate, but argued that all parties involved should seek solutions in advance through talks to avoid, as far as possible, the consequences of mobilizations like the one that affected dozens of tourists with scheduled flights who could not reach Cancún’s airport on time.

Blockades hit a destination built on visitors’ comfort

Perla Flores, president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) in Cancún, acknowledged that the blockades hurt everyone, but hit a tourist destination especially hard, where visitors’ comfort and perception are fundamental to an economy that depends heavily on domestic and international arrivals.

She reiterated respect for the right to protest but said she hopes such grievances can be resolved at dialogue tables between authorities and private-sector representatives, where the parties can address differences, present proposals and reach agreements that benefit both sides.

Flores said the entire Cancún sector aims to preserve the destination’s tourism competitiveness and its standing as one of Mexico’s most important vacation destinations, without undermining the public’s right to voice dissatisfaction.

Two-hour waits on the highway to Playa del Carmen

Workers and business owners reported delays along Colosio Boulevard and the federal highway to Playa del Carmen, where trips that normally take 20 minutes stretched past two hours.

Business leaders said they welcomed the opening of a dialogue table between authorities and the protesters, and signs of a possible solution to the dispute affecting the transport industry nationwide, after an official statement announcing the government’s willingness to talk was circulated across the country.
