Fishing boats docked at Isla Mujeres for the XXI International Fishing Tournament Cosme Alberto Martinez Magana

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The XXI International Fishing Tournament “Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña” officially launched Thursday night with the traditional Captains’ Dinner, drawing local, national, and international crews to this Caribbean island.

The event, one of Isla Mujeres’ most iconic sporting and tourism fixtures, brings together dozens of boats for a weekend of sport fishing in the Mexican Caribbean. Organizers said the tournament has become a key driver for nautical tourism and the local economy, benefiting restaurants, hotels, tour operators, and shops.

This year’s edition offers a prize pool of more than 900,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $45,000 USD), attracting teams from several Mexican states and abroad.

According to the official schedule, the starting signal for participating vessels will be given Saturday at 8:00 a.m., marking the formal start of the fishing competition.

Now in its 21st year, the tournament has established itself as a flagship event for Isla Mujeres, promoting the destination nationally and internationally while celebrating the island’s maritime heritage.
