Xcaret Workers Demand Inspection Over Alleged Health and Environmental Risks

Workers at Xcaret park demanding inspection of wastewater treatment plants over health and environmental concerns

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Employees of Grupo Xcaret have called on labor and environmental authorities to investigate alleged irregularities at the company’s wastewater treatment plants, citing potential health risks for staff and environmental damage.

In a complaint circulated by workers, who asked that their concerns be addressed by the relevant agencies, staff responsible for handling wastewater and sludge from the treatment process reportedly lack adequate protective equipment to perform their jobs safely.

The workers said constant exposure to sewage and waste may be linked to health issues, including skin irritation, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal discomfort, which they claim have been reported by several members of the operational team.

Environmental Concerns Raised

They also expressed concern about the general operation of the treatment plants, noting the presence of flies in various areas, possible damage to green spaces, and uncertainty over the handling and final disposal of sludge generated during the process.

“Respectfully, we call on the appropriate authorities to hear, investigate, and address these concerns in a timely manner,” the workers said in the document.

The complainants also said that despite raising the issues over an extended period, they had not received sufficient attention. They requested inspections to verify compliance with Mexican Official Standards on occupational safety and environmental protection.

Call for Regulatory Compliance

They also urged the implementation of measures to ensure adequate health, hygiene, and safety conditions for personnel operating the facilities, as well as actions to guarantee proper management of wastewater and byproducts.

The complaint also named maintenance area supervisors for allegedly failing to address reported conditions. It will be up to authorities to determine the veracity of the allegations and assign responsibility.

As of now, no inspections have been publicly announced in response to the complaints, and Grupo Xcaret has not issued an official statement regarding the workers’ allegations.

The request was directed to labor and environmental authorities with the aim of conducting the necessary checks and, if needed, ordering corrective measures to protect both employee health and the environment.
