Workers Demand Better Labor Conditions in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Grocery store workers staged a protest Monday in Playa del Carmen, demanding better working conditions and an end to alleged workplace harassment at several supermarkets.

Gathering at a well-known shopping center, the workers said they work eight-hour shifts earning about 3,200 pesos per week but are often required to perform double duties without extra pay.

They also reported a lack of proper tools and equipment, forcing them to improvise when moving merchandise due to insufficient carts and other materials.

Workers claimed that when they refuse tasks outside their job description or request more time to complete them, they face reprimands and disrespectful treatment.

“They are treating us badly, that’s what they’re doing. They make us run from here to there, it’s terrible. They tell us that if we arrive and don’t comply, we have to stay,” said a worker who identified herself as Britany Martínez.

Key demands include respect for each promoter’s specific duties, not being used to cover staffing shortages at stores, and that companies provide uniforms and adequate tools.

The protesters said this situation occurs at various establishments across the country and called on both retail chains and employing companies to guarantee dignified working conditions and respect for their rights.

The protest took place in front of a well-known shopping center on Avenida 30 in the Centro neighborhood, a common gathering point for residents purchasing household goods.
