Mexico City — A woman from the United States confronted employees and customers at a branch of the Orinoco taquería chain in Mexico City, in an incident captured on video that has spread widely on social media and earned her the nickname “Lady Gringa.”
Footage of the episode began circulating online, drawing indignation over the derogatory remarks she allegedly aimed at Mexicans and her repeated questions about how much the workers earn.
The recordings show the woman arguing with employees and other people inside the establishment as she insists on asking how much money they make in a year.
How the confrontation began
According to an account posted by a TikTok user who said he witnessed the episode, the confrontation started before the woman entered the taquería. The witness said he saw her arguing with an Uber driver and then confronting a person selling atole outside.
In his account, the foreigner asked the street vendor for a cigarette, and after he explained that he only had coins, she began insulting him.
The young man said that when he went into the taquería he found the woman demanding that staff order her a taxi through a mobile app and serve her in English. When they refused, he said, the situation became increasingly aggressive.
He added that the woman began arguing with a female employee and that when he stepped in to defend the workers, he too became involved in the altercation and was struck.
What the videos shows
In one of the clips circulating online, the woman repeatedly presses employees about their income while a waitress tries to persuade her to leave.
She then says in English: “What’s your big paycheck?” — a remark the witness interpreted as a provocation over the workers’ earnings.
The confrontation continues when the woman turns to the person filming and says: “This damn loser was talking to me.”
At another point, as the person recording asks her not to touch them, the woman replies: “Oh, I’m touching you.”
The recordings also show an employee trying to explain what is happening and stating that the woman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
