Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A woman was found dead on the sidewalk on Sunday night in the Colonia Colosio neighborhood, triggering a police operation and opening an investigation into a probable femicide, as the death occurred following an alleged assault.

Neighbors alerted police authorities around 7:00 p.m. via the 911 emergency number after hearing screams and discovering the woman on the pavement of 108th Street, between 30th and 35th Avenues. Witnesses stated that a woman was seen at the location with multiple wounds apparently caused by a bladed weapon, allegedly a machete.

Following the call for help, elements of the Municipal Police arrived at the scene and secured the area to preserve the crime scene. The Attorney General's Office of the state of Quintana Roo reported that it has initiated inquiries, without ruling out any line of investigation.

As of now, the detention of any suspect related to the attack has not been confirmed. Local authorities reported that the case will be handled with a gender perspective to determine if it constitutes a femicide, in compliance with established protocols.

The homicide caused consternation among residents of the colonia, who demanded increased surveillance in light of a rise in violent incidents in the residential area, one of the most populous in the municipality.
