Woman Hospitalized After Vector Control Fumigation in Jose Maria Morelos

Emergency responders attend to an elderly woman after fumigation chemical exposure in Jose Maria Morelos

Jose Maria Morelos, Quintana Roo — A 62-year-old woman was hospitalized Wednesday evening after inhaling chemicals from a vector control fumigation operation in the Morelos neighborhood.

Emergency services received a call at around 7:30 p.m. from a relative on Francisco May Street, between Kohunlich and 5 de Mayo, who reported that the woman was feeling ill after chemicals were sprayed in the area.

Firefighters treated Elsy Maria M. T. at the scene for dizziness and nausea before transporting her to the IMSS Bienestar hospital for further evaluation.

The relative told authorities that this was not the first such incident. He said the family had previously asked vector control workers to avoid fumigating near the home because of the woman’s health problems.

He also accused the fumigators of acting improperly, but by the time officials arrived, the workers had already left the area.

Weeks earlier, residents of the Morelos neighborhood had complained that vector control workers living in the area were leaving chemicals and empty containers behind, calling it a health hazard.
