Yucatán, Mexico — WhatsApp, the popular messaging application, may cease to be compatible with certain mobile devices in 2026, potentially leaving users in Yucatán without access to the service on older smartphones.
Each year, the application conducts a review of its compatibility criteria. When these criteria are updated, it can cause specific mobile phone models to stop functioning with the platform.
According to WhatsApp’s official page, to use the application, it is recommended to have mobile devices with the following operating systems:
- Android OS 5.0 and later versions
- iOS 15.1 and later versions
The platform explained that its software undergoes frequent changes, which is why supported operating systems are periodically reviewed. WhatsApp stated that it analyzes annually “which devices and software are the oldest and have the smallest number of users.”
The Meta-owned application argued that sometimes older mobile phones no longer have the necessary security updates or the functionality to continue operating WhatsApp. When devices stop receiving updates, the application cannot function properly.
Considering the information shared by the WhatsApp platform, mobile devices that could be left without the application due to their operating system include various brands and models. Among the most common are the following:
- iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c
- iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
- Samsung Galaxy S5
- Samsung Galaxy Trend
- Samsung Galaxy J2
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy Note 2
- Samsung Galaxy Core
It is important to note that, according to WhatsApp, before ceasing to support your phone’s operating system, you will receive a notification within the application. Nevertheless, users are advised to take precautions and stay informed about any changes.
