Motorcyclist killed after water truck runs red light in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon when a water truck ran a red light and struck him at the intersection of Avenida Chac Mool and Miguel Hidalgo, a crossing known as Ruta 5 in Cancún.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. According to initial reports, the motorcyclist was traveling along Miguel Hidalgo with a green light when the water truck, heading from Avenida José López Portillo toward Avenida Talleres on Chac Mool, crossed the intersection without stopping and hit the scooter.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist was thrown onto the pavement, and the truck ran over him before continuing roughly 800 meters, until residents blocked its path near Avenida Talleres. The crowd pulled the driver from the vehicle and held him, allegedly beating him, until municipal police arrived to prevent further violence.

Police took the driver into custody and handed him over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine his legal status.

Emergency crews, including traffic officers, municipal police, and paramedics, responded to a 911 call. Paramedics confirmed the motorcyclist had died. Investigators and forensic experts processed the scene, and the body was transferred to the forensic medical service for an autopsy.

The victim was identified as a man in his 40s, wearing a dark red shirt, white shorts, and sandals, and riding a black Italika scooter. The water truck was white.

The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to establish the exact cause of the crash.
