Viacrucis Procession Draws Faithful in Tulum Streets

Tulum, Quintana Roo — The morning of Good Friday saw Tulum become the stage for one of the most significant religious observances in the Christian calendar: the Viacrucis, or Way of the Cross. The procession, which commemorates Jesus Christ’s journey to his crucifixion, began at the city’s central church, the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and drew dozens of faithful participants who walked through the main streets in an act of devotion and prayer.

A Tradition Rooted in Faith

The Viacrucis—also known as the Stations of the Cross—is a centuries-old Christian tradition inspired by the biblical account of Jesus’ path from Pontius Pilate’s Praetorium to Mount Calvary, where he was crucified. Along the route, participants reenact the 14 stations representing key moments of his suffering, from his sentencing to his burial.

In Tulum, the annual event was organized by the local Catholic community, with volunteers dressed in period costumes portraying scenes meant to inspire spiritual reflection. The procession served not only as an act of faith but also as a cultural gathering, attracting families and tourists who joined in respectfully.

This commemoration is part of the liturgical activities of Holy Week, one of the most important periods in Christianity, marking the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On Saturday, the traditional Easter Vigil is expected to take place, where worshippers will gather after nightfall to celebrate Christ’s resurrection with a ceremony featuring the blessing of the new fire and the lighting of the Paschal Candle.

The celebrations will culminate on Sunday with the Resurrection Mass, also known as Easter Sunday, the most significant feast in the Christian calendar, symbolizing the triumph of life over death and the renewal of faith.

With strong participation and an atmosphere of reverence, Tulum reaffirms its religious and communal traditions, preserving the spiritual roots that have been passed down through generations in this symbolic act.
