Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police in Playa del Carmen arrested two men on suspicion of drug offenses after officers on patrol spotted them apparently exchanging narcotics and later found suspected marijuana and crystal meth in their backpacks, authorities said.
The arrests took place in the Villas del Sol subdivision, where officers with the Playa del Carmen Public Security Department were carrying out a crime-prevention patrol. According to the department, the officers noticed two men who appeared to be trading what looked like narcotics. When the men spotted the patrol vehicle, they tried to flee.
Officers caught up with them and searched two backpacks they were carrying, finding several packages containing what appeared to be marijuana and crystal meth, officials said.
Authorities said the suspects did not resist arrest. They only tried to climb away in an attempt to avoid responsibility, knowing they were carrying drugs, according to the police account.
The men were identified as Miguel Alejandro “N.”, 19, a native of Tabasco, and Kevin Uriel “N.”, 25, a native of Monterrey. Mexican authorities routinely withhold suspects’ full surnames at this stage of a case.
Both were handed over to the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office, which will carry out the investigation.
