Playa del Carmen — Two individuals, who were apparently intoxicated, "were born again" after surviving a vehicle rollover on Colosio Avenue. The incident occurred after they were returning home from a party when the driver lost control of the steering wheel.
Despite the severity of the accident, the two people traveling in the car sustained only minor injuries.
The event took place around 22:00 hours on Sunday. The white car in which they were traveling was heading west near the intersections of Flor de Ciruelos and Lilis avenues. The driver, who was swerving and traveling at excessive speed, lost control, crashed against some rocks, then hit a perimeter wall, and ended up rolling over.
Although the occupants suffered only minor injuries, the scene reflected the gravity of the problem; the driver, still disoriented and drunk, fell asleep on the grass after being rescued. He was subsequently remitted to the Directorate of Transit, while the vehicle was taken to the impound lot.
This case revives the discussion about a lack of awareness and weak penalties, as this type of accident, although frequent, rarely ends with legal consequences proportional to the risk they represent for the citizenry.
