Tulum, Quintana Roo — The municipal government will launch an operation Monday to remove businesses that illegally occupy public spaces, starting in the La Veleta neighborhood, officials announced.
Sergio Canto Contreras, head of the city’s inspection department, said the operation responds to numerous citizen complaints about unregulated street vendors and workshops blocking sidewalks and roads.
“We’ll start in La Veleta, then move to the city center and surrounding neighborhoods,” Canto Contreras said. “The goal is to restore order and free up public spaces.”
The operation will also target mechanic shops that use streets as work areas, obstructing vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Canto Contreras said the effort will be coordinated with the Public Security Department.
City officials urged vendors without permits to come forward and regularize their status. The municipality will also analyze existing permits and consider relocating some vendors to avoid unfair competition with established businesses that pay taxes.
