Akumal, Quintana Roo — The conflict between the Oasis Akumal hotel and residents of the Aventuras Akumal condominium escalated again this week after the Tulum city council removed closure seals it had placed on an allegedly illegal bar demolition — without public explanation and in less than 72 hours.
The seals were originally installed on April 27 following complaints from condo owners. But they were lifted in record time, with no disclosure of the legal basis or administrative procedures involved, residents said.
Workers immediately resumed demolition using jackhammers, leaving the structure almost completely destroyed, according to witnesses.
Condo owners denounced the municipality’s actions as potentially irregular, alleging possible backroom deals between local authorities and the hotel chain. They also reported an intensification of pressure tactics, including what they described as baseless claims about remodeling work in their apartments, which they view as harassment in retaliation for their complaints.
The dispute has a recent history. On April 27, condo owners accused the hotel of land grabbing, illegal construction, and possible collusion with authorities. The next day, the Tulum council placed closure seals on the demolition after confirming irregularities and even attempts to hide the seals.
At the heart of the conflict, residents say, is the hotel’s plan to adjust property boundaries and seize the plot to build another recreational facility operated by a U.S. hotel brand.
The Tulum city council has not issued an official statement explaining why it reversed its own sanction. The demolition continues, and tensions remain high between condo owners and the hotel administration.
