The Tulum Hotel Association has expressed strong disapproval of the road blockades instigated by members of the Taxi Drivers Union. These blockades have occurred three times in the state, disrupting the travel plans of numerous tourists.
David Ortiz Mena, president of the Tulum Hotel Association, has voiced his concerns over the impact these actions have on tourism. "It's incredibly misguided to harm tourists for personal gain," he stated.
The blockades have led to the cancellation of several tourist groups. However, Ortiz Mena points out that the measurable impact is only part of the problem. "There's a larger, unquantifiable impact – the damage done to our destination's reputation. This isn't just about a few hours or an afternoon; it erodes the trust of visitors, making them less likely to return," he explained.
Ortiz Mena expressed disappointment that the taxi drivers seem to lack awareness of the broader consequences of their actions. He emphasized that by harming tourism, they are also damaging their own economy.
"It's inexcusable and we cannot tolerate our visitors being affected in this way," he said. "We trust that the authorities will do everything in their power to prevent such incidents from happening again. Quintana Roo's economy heavily relies on our visitors, and we can't afford to jeopardize that," he concluded.
