Mexico City — Starbucks Mexico, operated by the restaurant group Alsea, will bring back the Unicorn Frappuccino, one of its most memorable limited-edition drinks, nearly a decade after it became a viral phenomenon.

The beverage, first launched in 2017, generated around 180,000 organic Instagram posts in less than a week, according to company data. In Mexico, demand was so strong that some locations ran out of ingredients on the first day.

The drink features a creamy mango base, a blue sauce with tangy notes, whipped cream and a pink-and-blue topping. It is known for combining sweet and tart flavors and for shifting in color and taste as it is consumed.

The Unicorn Frappuccino will be available from Aug. 15 through Aug. 17 at participating Starbucks locations in Mexico. During that window, customers can also order it through Rappi, which will be the exclusive delivery partner for the comeback. Availability will depend on stock.

Cold drinks already play a major role in Starbucks delivery orders in Mexico. According to Rappi, cold beverages and frappuccinos account for more than 77% of Starbucks drink orders placed through the platform. Gen Z and Millennial customers make up about 92% of that demand, with peak ordering between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mexico City leads with more than 25% of Starbucks consumption on Rappi, followed by Guadalajara at 16% and Monterrey at 8%.

“There are drinks that create a special connection with our customers, and the Unicorn Frappuccino is undoubtedly one of them,” Diego Recalde, marketing director at Alsea Starbucks, said in a statement.

“Being the exclusive platform for the return of the Unicorn Frappuccino lets us take a phenomenon that marked a generation and introduce it to a new one, using Rappi’s technology and immediacy,” Daniel Molina, director of corporate restaurants at Rappi Mexico, said in another statement.

The return is part of Starbucks’ broader strategy in Mexico to revive limited-edition products that resonated strongly with consumers. For Rappi, the partnership ties the platform to a product whose original launch was closely linked to social media buzz.
