Chiquilá, Quintana Roo — A transformer fire near the pier caused a widespread blackout in the port town of Chiquilá late Thursday, leaving dozens of families without electricity amid intense heat, local officials said.
Former councilman José Luis Marcial Toto reported that the blackout began around 10 p.m. Thursday, prompting complaints from residents struggling with the region’s high temperatures. The situation worsened around 3 a.m. Friday when a transformer near the pier caught fire, sparking fears among nearby residents.
Technicians from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived at the scene overnight to address the failure and work on restoring power, Marcial Toto said.
Chiquilá port mayor Jairo Nain Pérez Coral attributed the outage to voltage fluctuations originating from Kantunilkín, explaining that the power surge caused the transformer to burn out.
During the emergency, several families requested emergency services due to concerns that the transformer fire could pose a greater risk to those living near the pier area.
