Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Thieves are hiding among the mangroves at Playa 72 and stealing belongings from beachgoers while they swim, according to Sergio Beristain, a representative of the Dog Beach collective.
Beristain said afternoon visitors, before sunset, have been the main targets. He said the thefts occur near the fence that surrounds the Chen Zubul property.
“They hide among the mangroves to strip people of their belongings when they enter the water,” he said.
Beristain urged beachgoers, including those arriving with their pets at the dog-friendly beach, to avoid the fenced area because that is where the thieves hide. He also recommended not bringing valuables, identification, or passports to the beach.
He said tourist police have been contacted to reinforce security at the site.
