Terrifying Hotel Pergola Collapse Shocks Riviera Maya

An official statement has been released regarding an incident involving a wooden pergola falling on a guest at the Barceló Riviera Maya Hotel. The report was issued by the Solidaridad Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Fire Department on Sunday, following the circulation of photos and a video of the collapsed structure on social media.

The statement detailed that approximately eight days prior, a wooden pergola in the hotel's pool area collapsed onto a guest during a period of heavy rain. The guest, a male tourist from the Riviera Maya, was walking under the pergola with an umbrella when the structure gave way. The collapse resulted in the umbrella being torn from his hand and the man being left in a hunched position. Several other male guests rushed to his aid.

The Solidaridad Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Fire Department reported that they were initially denied access to the hotel for inspection. After a 20-minute wait, the hotel's security assistant informed them that the incident had occurred eight days prior and that the injured guest had received care and was no longer staying at the hotel.

Upon finally gaining access to the area, the team found that the rubble from the collapse had already been cleared, leaving no visible evidence of the incident. Nevertheless, the area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure to prevent any further risk.

The Solidaridad Town Council also commented on the incident, stating, "Today, October 27, 2024, we received a report about the collapse of a structure in the sunbed and pool area of the Barceló Riviera Maya Hotel. Although the incident occurred days ago and the hotel attended to the injured tourist, we remain committed to ensuring everyone's safety."

The council further stated that they are coordinating with various secretariats to establish an inspection schedule. This is to ensure that all tourism service providers comply with regulations and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. They concluded by emphasizing that the safety and well-being of everyone is their top priority.
