Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen will no longer approve new real estate developments unless they include the electrical substations needed to keep the local power grid from being overwhelmed, Mayor Estefanía Mercado said.
The municipal government has set up a working group with developers to review their projects and confirm that each one includes the required substations, she said.
“Developers are already stepping up with the CFE, and we as a municipality coordinate these working groups,” Mercado said, referring to Mexico’s state-owned Federal Electricity Commission.
Mercado said Playa del Carmen is growing at a rapid pace and needs a housing supply that keeps up, describing the imbalance as one of the municipality’s biggest challenges.
She said the federal “Viviendas para el Bienestar” housing program is helping ease the pressure, with 14,000 units planned and another seven projects under study.
The mayor added that the municipality has done its part by subsidizing services and waiving permit fees so that homes can be built at low cost for workers.
