Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The Puerto Morelos port authority expects to close 2026 on a positive note and open new commercial projects, supported by a steady flow of vessels and plans to expand its shipping routes in the final two months of the year, according to Iván Ferrat Mancera, head of the Quintana Roo Integral Port Administration (Apiqroo).
Ferrat Mancera said a new shipping company has been under negotiation for nearly five months and could begin operating between November and December, adding a new foreign trade route to Guatemala.
“We are doing very well, the arrival of ships is holding steady compared with last year, and we have a new project with a new shipping line that we have been working on for almost five months,” the official said. “We expect it to come together at the end of the year, between November and December, and it is a new foreign trade route to Guatemala.”
The new route would lift the volume of goods moving through the port by 60% to 70%. Officials aim to strengthen regional supply and consolidate the terminal as a key logistics hub. It would initially focus on exporting refrigerated products while also seeking to import Central American supplies for the state’s tourism industry.
To support the operations, Apiqroo has opened infrastructure at the terminal. Starting Nov. 1, offices will be available for shipping lines and customs agents interested in opening markets in Quintana Roo, making it easier to set up new services.
The maritime terminal currently operates at 60% of its capacity with two shipping lines. The arrival of a third company depends on reaching a minimum cargo volume that guarantees the route’s profitability.
